The function of the ink roller is to quantify the print ink and transfer it evenly to the plate. Ink rollers can be divided into three types: ink loading, ink transfer, and print-based ink rollers. Ink rollers, also known as ink bucket rollers, are used to extract the right amount of ink from the ink bucket each time and then transfer them to the ink transfer roller (also known as the ink homogenization roller). The ink transfer roller receives this ink and distributes it evenly to form an evenly distributed ink film, which is then transferred to the plate roller. Plate rollers (also known as plate rollers) are responsible for distributing incoming ink evenly over the plate. At this point, the task of the ink roller is completed. During the sequential transfer of several rubber rollers, the uniform distribution of the ink is gradually completed. In this process, in addition to rubber rollers, hard rollers and so-called ink rollers are present. In offset presses, rubber rollers and hard rollers are always placed at intervals to form a configuration of alternating hard and soft. This arrangement is more conducive to the transfer and uniform distribution of ink. The function of the ink belt roller can further enhance the axial distribution of the ink. It rotates when it is working, and it also performs axial translation, so it is called an ink roller.

The water roller also includes water carrying water, passing water and printing. At present, there are two methods of supplying water to the water roller, which is a continuous water supply method that relies on a printing plate roller without a water flannel cloth cover, and the water supply is achieved by adjusting the speed of the bucket roll. Early methods of water supply were intermittent, relying on plate rollers covered with velvet lids and oscillating the water rollers to supply water. The continuous water supply method is suitable for high-speed printing, while the intermittent water supply method has gradually been replaced.

The roll core construction can be hollow or solid depending on the application. The weight of the rubber roller is often required, which affects the counterweight of the machine and, in turn, the vibration stability during operation. Most of the rubber rollers of offset printing machines are hollow rollers, usually made of seamless steel pipes, and the shaft heads on both sides are welded to the steel pipe as a whole. However, in the near future, it will also be made of non-metallic materials, such as glass fiber reinforced plastics and other polymer materials, the purpose of which is to reduce weight and improve operating speed and stability.
